Pelagic Data Systems was founded in 2014 in San Francisco, California to bring a technologists’ approach to the very human problems in the world’s fisheries.
We believe it’s possible to help fishermen earn a better living, while reducing the amount of seafood that goes to waste and minimizing the environmental impact of fishing.
Our team brings together entrepreneurs with telecommunications, hardware, software, science, and operational expertise who have developed a deep understanding of the fishing industry. The Pelagic Data Systems team is united in our passion for building a business that helps support the livelihoods of a tenth of the world’s population.
Dave is a lifelong entrepreneur with over 18 years of experience developing and implementing technology-based solutions for complex problems.
As a Co-Founder and CEO of Pelagic, he sets the strategic direction, leads product development, and manages the organization. Dave is driven by his belief that technology can be used to help solve social and environmental problems.
Melissa Garren, PhD
Chief Scientific Officer
Melissa is a marine biologist who specializes in the intersection of technology and marine conservation. She has extensive experience working with local communities and diverse groups of stakeholders to effect positive change on issues of artisanal fishery sustainability and nearshore water quality.
At Pelagic, she is responsible for providing scientific leadership and aligning the company's technology development programs with the needs of both the ecosystems and the communities dependent on them. She holds a B.S. from Yale University, and M.S. and Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and completed postdoctoral work at MIT in the application of cutting-edge technologies to marine conservation solutions.
Will leads the development of Pelagic’s technology. Will has been developing software since the 90s and has had hardware and software development roles at both large international and early stage tech companies. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science for the University of Wisconsin and prior to Pelagic Data Systems he designed wireless infrastructure software and embedded hardware for ocean monitoring applications. He wants to bring the life-improving benefits of big data to fisherman around the world.
Director of Field Operations
Daniel focuses on product development and implementation. He is inspired by seeing first-hand the impact of these technologies in the local communities.
With a diverse background combining North American, Latin American, and European experience across several functional areas, Daniel is well-qualified to advise on both global strategy and local implementation. Before joining Pelagic, Daniel managed the implementation of traceability technology in Latin America as a head of infrastructure for a global seafood traceability company. He holds a Master of Science in Engineering Degree, and is fluent in four languages.
